Mindfulness training programs have attained solid ground in many areas of life: personal development, work, health, education, leadership. In this short teacher training you will learn the basic skills of a mindfulness trainer.
This program is recognized by the Dutch associations of professional mindfulness teachers.

You quickly learn some tools and how to offer them as a trainer for the group. Looking behind the screen, you get a picture of how ingenious the eight week training works.


After completing this course, you've made extensive acquaintance with the basic skills of mindfulness trainer landscape: guiding practices, inquiry and education. In addition, you have developed in the embodiment of mindfulness. You understand structure and different ingredients of MBSR and other MBIs. You are able to work independently with elements of training in a private practice.

I notice how quickly I learned to guide mindfulness practices... but also how much there is still to learn!

Connection to the Teacher Training Advanced Program

This Foundation Program integrates seamlessly with the Advanced Program. Together they form a complete and integrated program. Therefore, we recommend to plan both modules as one. Of course it is possible to start with the Foundation Program and decide later upon continuation of your Teacher Training through the Advanced Program.

Learning by doing

Learning by doing is the motto of this training. The curriculum is organized accordingly. It includes training to teach the exercises and practices of MBSR/MBCT, dialogue with the group (inquiry), presenting educational themes. Structure and elements of the MBSR/MBCT are worked through.

For whom

The foundational mindfulness teachers training is open to anyone who wants to be a mindfulness teacher and meets the following requirements:

  • you followed a mindfulness training MBSR/MBCT as a participant*
  • you have the motivation to mold your personal passion for mindfulness into professional trainer skills and attitudes
  • you completed some form of higher education
  • you have some experience in working with people in a field focused on personal development
  • you have at least half a year of daily meditation practice (in the traditions Vipassana, Zen or Dzogchen)

Experiencing through the body and the senses - Embodiment, practice what you teach - rely on the process and on the strength of the concept - look from fresh at myself as a trainer, at participants and the program... too much to mention. So enriching to my work and life!

* With a mindfulness training MBSR/MBCT we mean: a group training in the tradition of Kabat-Zinn (MBSR) and/or Segal et al (MBCT). Some characteristics: 8 weekly group sessions of at least 2.5 hours, daily homework load of at least half an hour, exercises and body exploration, yoga and sitting meditation, group discussion of training experiences (inquiry). The training is given by a mindfulness trainer who so itself has undergone full training (see definition of "full training": professional association VMBN, category 1).

  • Rob Brandsma

    Psychologist and mindfulnesstrainer

    Rob Brandsma

    Rob Brandsma is director of the Centrum voor Mindfulness, trainer on the Teacher Training MBSR/MBCT and trainer on the Teacher Training Self-Compassion MSC. His main interest lies in applying mindfulness and compassion to the many domains of daily life and specifically to health care. He has been involved in developing a number of mindfulness-based interventions.

    Rob is directing the mindfulness teacher training programs of the Centrum voor Mindfulness. He is the author of several popular books on mindfulness in Dutch. He published books on on the pedagogy of teaching mindfulness, such as The Mindfulness Teaching Guide: Essential Skills and Competencies for Teaching Mindfulness-Based Interventions.

    Keen on following the progress of scientific research on mindfulness he tries to base his work as a teacher and developer on the newest insights in the field.

    Rob, sharing about his passion for mindfulness: ‘Mindfulness enables me to deal better with challenges and obstacles and realize more often that the here and now is (almost) always the best place to dwell in. It enriches my life with insight, wonder and tenderness. It’s a gift to be able to bring this in my work as well.’

    Rob used to work as a prevention officer in addiction treatment, as director of an organization in the health prevention sector, and in his own practice for psychology. He is a trained pedagogue and a registered (but not-practicing) healthcare psychologist.

    Mila de Koning

    Mila de Koning is a social therapist, nurse and mindfulness and compassion teacher. She has a long professional experience working in (mental) health care with groups. And she worked as a teacher for healthcare professionals. Since 2011 her focus is mainly on mindfulness and compassion and she started working for the VU University Medical Centre where one of her main roles was to bring mindfulness and self-compassion to healthcare.

    Currently she works as teacher and teacher trainer at the Centrum voor Mindfulness in Amsterdam. She teaches mindfulness and MSC courses and is also a teacher trainer for mindfulness and for mindful self-compassion. One of her great aspirations is to bring mindfulness to healthcare, especially for doctors and other healthcare professionals.

    “You need to let the little things that would ordinarily bore you suddenly thrill you,” zei kunstenaar Andy Warhol. Met andere woorden: kijk niet weg, want er is meer te ontdekken in het leven. Elke ervaring, prettig of onprettig, kun je doorvoelen. Voor mij betekent leven met aandacht –mindfulness- en meditatie dat ik bewuster in het leven sta en geniet, maar ook dat ik keuzevrijheid ervaar op stressvolle momenten. Ik sta zelf aan het roer, en niemand anders.

    Meditatie en mindfulness zijn vaardigheden die je kunnen helpen op lastige of spanningsvolle momenten. Mindfulness leert je ook om wat minder streng voor jezelf te zijn en dat je gewoon mag zijn zoals je bent. Het leert je dat het lichaam en de mind met elkaar verbonden zijn en hoe belangrijk het is om die relatie te onderhouden.

    Meditatie brengt mensen dichter bij zichzelf. Midden in de storm kan deze vaardigheid je helpen om te centreren wanneer je de balans dreigt te verliezen. De reikwijdte van deze beoefening is daarom misschien wel veel breder en dieper dan je in eerste instantie dacht. Hoe kunnen we samen dat landschap verkennen? Die open uitnodiging wil ik overbrengen aan de cursisten en aspirant-trainers in mijn trainingen en in de opleidingen waar ik als docent aan verbonden ben.

    In het Centrum voor Mindfulness geef ik als hoofddocent les in de Opleiding tot Mindfulnesstrainer voor Volwassenen, leid ik leraren op in de Opleiding tot Trainer MindfulKids en de Trainersopleiding .b. Samen met elkaar en van elkaar leren vind ik een van de mooiste dingen aan dit vak.

    Ik woon in Haarlem. Daar geef ik yogalessen en de achtweekse mindfulnesstraining op open inschrijving. Vanaf juli 2016 bied ik in mijn eigen praktijk voor lichaam en geest in mijn thuisstad ook acupunctuurbehandelingen aan.

    Sinds 1994 ben ik werkzaam als zelfstandig gevestigd psycholoog arbeid en gezondheid en heb ik mijn eigen bureau met dienstverlening aan verschillende beroepsgroepen zoals politie, justitie, instellingen voor gezondheidszorg en aan particulieren. Een belangrijke kern van mijn werkzaamheden is mensen leren omgaan met acute en chronische stress en de gevolgen hiervan.

    De waarde van meditatie begon ik in te zien tijdens een 10-daagse stilte retraite in 2005 bij Frits Koster. Het was voor mij verrassend te ervaren hoe in stilte, ervaringen en levensvragen zich aandienen en hoe antwoorden uit zichzelf ontstaan - alleen al door er ruimte aan te geven en ervoor open te staan. Sindsdien ben ik me gaan verdiepen in de boeddhistische psychologie en in verschillende meditatievormen, zoals inzichtmeditatie (vipassana) en kalmte- en concentratiemeditatie (shamatha).

    Sinds 2007 geef ik met veel voldoening de mindfulnesstraining, vooral omdat deelnemers leren om te pauzeren te midden van hun vaak drukke bezigheden, om vaker stil te staan bij hun eigen wijsheid, en met meer gemak leren omgaan met stressvolle ervaringen.

    Bij het Centrum voor Mindfulness geef ik les als hoofddocent aan de opleiding tot mindfulnesstrainer en geef ik de vervolgtrainingen compassie en kalmte- en concentratiemeditatie. Ik draag de missie van het centrum graag mede uit, omdat in de trainingen westerse en boeddhistische psychologie mooi samen komen.

    Femke Kok

    Mindfulness betekent voor mij mezelf oefenen in helemaal aanwezig zijn op de plek waar ik ben; alles wat ik mee maak open tegemoet treden en toestaan te voelen wat ik erbij voel. Mindfulness-beoefening zorgt ervoor dat ik de directe ervaring kan beleven in elk moment, in wat ik doe of mee maak en dat ik daarmee meer voldoening en diepgang ervaar in de dingen die ik doe.

    Mijn naam is Femke Kok (1975). In 1998 ben ik afgestudeerd als klinisch psycholoog (UvA) en daarna heb ik de postdoctorale opleidingen gedaan tot GZ-psycholoog en psychotherapeut BIG. Ik werk sinds 1999 in een GGZ-instelling en daarnaast heb ik ook een eigen praktijk in Amsterdam, als psychotherapeut en coach.

    In mijn leven heeft meditatie een centrale plek. Ik heb me verdiept in het (Tibetaans) boeddhisme, en de afgelopen jaren steeds meer in mindfulness/vipassana. Ik ben enthousiast over de mogelijkheden in de Oosterse filosofie om de Westerse psychologie te verrijken en verbeteren. Dat is mijn passie en het onderwerp blijft me uitdagen en inspireren. Het heeft me persoonlijk veel gebracht en het heeft mijn werk in het begeleiden van anderen effectiever, liefdevoller en plezieriger gemaakt. Om mijn mindfulnessbeoefening te verdiepen en inspiratie te verversen doe ik regelmatig (stilte)retraites en cursussen op het gebied van mindfulness en compassie.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do the Foundational and Graduation Teacher Training relate to each other?

    Foundational and Graduation Teacher Training fit seamlessly together. Together they form a complete course. Therefore, it is recommended that both modules are planned and booked as one.
    However, we present this complete course in two separate modules especially for people for who a commitment to a full year of training is not feasible for practical reasons. Others prefer to explore this training trajectory first, before they commit further.

  • Is the course fee inclusive or are there additional costs?

    The cost of Foundational Training are all in, except for the study books. The rest, including Teacher Training Workbook and a set of CDs, you will get from the us. This also applies to the cost of the Graduation Training. Only the three individual supervision sessions associated are paid separately. Supervisors usually charge 120 Euros per session. Curse fees are exempt from VAT.

  • Can I pay the course fee in installments?

    For the Graduation Course is - upon request - payment by installments possible. See the Terms and Conditions.

  • How do I sign up?

    By filling out the registration form. You can find this form (in Dutch) by pressing the button 'Register' on the web pages of both programs.

  • After subscription, what are next the steps?

    One of the teachers will contact you. In a pre-class interview, we are interested in your motivation. And we will exchange information on your background and on the training. This interview can conducted by phone.
    After admission, you will receive a written confirmation for training, plus invoice. This is your final registration.

  • What are the requirements for certification?

    To obtain the certificate, a number of conditions that include relating to attendance, participation in the courses and running the home assignments apply. These conditions are described (in Dutch) in the General Conditions

  • Provides this course access to the Associations for Mindfulness Teachers?

    The programs provide access to the Dutch Vereniging Voor Mindfulnesstrainers (VVM). The Foundational Course provides access to Category 2 of the Vereniging voor Mindfulness-based Trainers Nederland (VMBN ; the Graduation Course to Category 1 of this association.

  • What does it take to become a mindfulness teacher?

    With mindfulness we are more awake, more aware. Thus, mindfulness has a self-regulating capacity. Paradoxically, the development of mindfulness is a process of trial and error, because our conditioned patterns are persistent.
    The job of a mindfulness teacher is to guide people in this process. This is only possible if the trainer himself is well known to the terrain of developing mindfulness, if he is acquainted with mindfulness from personal experience, if he has skills in guiding learning processes and awareness about his own pitfalls and blind spots.
    Besides your passion and interest is the main thing you need as a teacher, your own development in mindfulness meditation and mindfulness. This is also the orientation from which teachers guide you through the teacher training, the supervision and assessment interviews.

  • How much education do you need before you can teach mindfulness classes?

    Over the last decade, a fair consensus has risen on that issue. The Center For Mindfulness of Jon Kabat-Zinn in Massachusetts gives a guideline on the amount of mindfulness practice and teaching experience that is required and coaching experience; likewise, the English Network for Mindfulness-based Teachers provides guidelines for good practice. In addition, specific training in mindfulness trainer skills of hundred a hundred fifty contact hours are required. A Dutch professional association such as the global VMBN closes in with this line of thought. The Centrum voor Mindfulness has adjusted its programs to these standards.

  • What literature is used in training?

    You will receive a workbook which includes articles on topical themes for mindfulness trainers. The books you need to buy yourself (some in English, some in Dutch) are indicated on the webpages of the respective programs. In addition, the program recommends a number of books wholeheartedly. See the list of recommended literature.

  • What is the homework load during training?

    The homework load is about an average of four hours per week. This includes preparing the exercises to be practiced in class, studying literature, reflecting on training experiences and (once per course) preparing a presentation.
    Part of the Graduation Course is guiding a trial training, accompanied by peer review, supervision and a reflection report. All this demands an additional investment of time.
    Maintenance of a personal meditation practice goes by itself and is therefore not counted as homework load. Finally, you can expect that growing into the role of a mindfulness teacher might stir up some personal themes which also may require some mindful attention.

  • Why do I need to do a mindfulness training as a participant before enrolling in the teacher training?

    Even though mindfulness training contains elements of meditation, yoga and behavioural training, yet it is something other than these factors, or even the sum thereof.
    Mindfulness is learned by experience. Just as you can endlessly talk about the taste of a strawberry without transferring its essence, which you know immediately once you taste it, likewise you can only know what mindfulness training is by experiencing it.
    And there is another reason: once you’ve tasted it, you know what you choose. A training course like this is quite a large trajectory.
    Any experience with meditation or yoga serves as a valuable basis; however, it does not compensate for the unique experience of participating in an eight-week mindfulness training MBSR / MBCT.

  • Why is following a mindfulness training as a participant not included in the Teacher Course?

    Mindfulness training invites a process of personal development, allowing you work very intimate issues. If you are doing the for yourself, it is good to have the space to go through your own development without at the same time having to deal with questions as how to teach it as a professional.
    This also works in reverse: without experience with mindfulness your personal process during teacher training might demand quite some space, leaving less room for your professional.

  • What criteria needs to meet the mindfulness training MBSR/MBCT you must do as a participant before enrolling the teacher training?

    With a ‘mindfulness training MBSR/MBCT’ we mean: a group training in the tradition of Kabat-Zinn (MBSR) and or Segal et al (MBCT). Some characteristics: 8 weekly group sessions of at least 2.5 hours, daily homework load of at least half an hour, and body exploration exercises, yoga and sitting meditation, group discussion of training experiences (inquiry). The training is given by a mindfulness trainer who has followed to this end a (full) trainer training (for definition of ‘full trainership’: professional association VMBN category 1).

  • After the Foundational Training, should I directly move on, or wait before starting the Graduate Training?

    The modular structure of the program has many advantages. The Foundational Training is directly accessible, even if you do not quite know or plan in advance in what form will you work as a mindfulness teacher. You can start, learn the practices and skills and use them in your work and life.
    The structure of the modules is such that it is possible to follow the Foundational and Graduation Courses in an immediate sequence. Direct continuation makes you within a year, in one flow, fully trained as a mindfulness teacher. This is, you might say, the royal road.
    However, the modular construction also provides the possibility to keep the continuing into consideration and to make it possible at a later date.

  • I did not de my Foundation Course at the Centrum voor Mindfulness. Can I still enrol in the Graduation Course?

    Yes, that is possible if you have an equivalent training experience to the Foundation Course. You are eligible for so-called ‘lateral entry’ in the program if you have: have a training experience equivalent to the initial training, i.e. eight full days of training specifically on mindfulness teacher competencies (MBSR/MBCT), containing together an equal division between the following parts: theory and practice of inquiry, education and guiding exercises (formal and informal); understanding of coherence, structure and active ingredients of the eight-week program; - acquainted with the literature as stated in the Foundational Teacher Training;
    - meets the other conditions listed under ‘Conditions for participation’ of the Graduation Training.
    If you want to enrol directly in the Graduation Training, please present your experience in these areas in the application form. The final decision for admission rests with the teachers of the training.

  • What is asked for the written final exam?

    A written examination is part of the conclusion of the Foundational Training. This exam contains some open questions about basics of mindfulness and mindfulness training. The questions to answer without a lot of extra study effort if you have read the literature and attended the teaching days in an attentive manner. The exam, which takes about forty minutes, is held on the last day of class.

  • When I give my pilot training?

    Part of the Graduation Training is giving a trial training. The preferable during the second half of this training. You can then form a peer group with fellow students and your training experience feedback to the training. If for some reason this is not a good time for you, it is possible to give the pilot training later, up until one year after the last training day of your Graduation course.
    Als je direct in de Vervolgopleiding wilt instromen dien je deze ervaring op het aanmeldingsformulier aan te tonen. De uiteindelijke beslissing voor toelating ligt bij de opleiding.

  • What is the purpose of the pilot training?

    You pilot training is designed to practice what you have learned in the teacher training. It is not a good moment to vary on the lessons learned. Therefore, we ask you to choose a group that you does not proposes particular challenges to you and to which the average MBSR/MBCT/MBSR-IT program fits. You are yourself responsible for recruitment, for pre-class interviews, practical and conceptual organization of this training. Number of participants: preferably 6 to 10, but 3 to 5 participants is already a group.

  • How do I get the workbook for my pilot training?

    Every teacher teaches in his own style, and part of your style is your workbook. Composing your own workbook is part of the preparation of the training that you are going to give. Only then can we embody mindfulness, a large well in the tradition. Putting together your own folder gives you also an opportunity to zoom in on the needs of your group. This does not mean that every trainer needs to write his own texts from A to Z to. There are circulating many good texts in circulation and may continue to retain what is good. For example, look at the titles on the Literature page for trainers.
    In addition, the Centrum voor Mindfulness offers (Dutch) texts that you can freely use for teaching purposes. These can be found and downloaded from the Trainer Materials page (please create an account first).

  • How do I get the audio material for my pilot training?

    For mindfulness training you need tracks of guided exercises. You do not have to have tracks right from your first pilot training. Feel free, if you are going to give a workout, to temporarily work with the tracks (CDs or MP3s) of someone else, preferably someone who fits your style. This is usually a trainer where you also like to listen to themselves. With most teachers of name you can purchase tracks and/or CDs for this purpose.
    Please not that audio-tracks are copyrighted, just as movies and written text are.

  • What are reflection reports and what are they for?

    The main thing you learn as a mindfulness teacher, as part of your embodiment is: to become aware, to look at yourself. You can practice this by writing about your own experience when practicing your skills and competencies. To propagate this development we ask you as part of the Foundational Training, to making one short (half page A4) reflection report on a day of class. In the Graduation Training we ask you to write up a longer (ten to twelve pages A4) on the experience of your pilot training.

  • What conditions must meet the retreat?

    One of the conditions for participation in the Graduation Training is having followed a retreat. A retreat provides a necessary and deepening experience for your embodiment as a mindfulness teacher. (You can, in consultation with us, meet this condition also during the first half of the Graduation Training.)
    Here the conditions which a retreat should meet:
    - A minimum of seven days (consecutive);
    - It must be a silent retreat guided by a meditation teacher concern;
    - Meditation is central (i.e. no other themes or methods);
    - Preferably in the vipassana tradition;
    - Or else in the traditions zen or Dzogchen (Tibetan Buddhism).
    - If you are wondering if you retreat experience or -choice meets as a condition for Graduation Training, it is best to contact one of the teachers.

  • Which parts are required?

    We have some set rules for graduation. There is an attendance requirement of 85% and a number of rules about participating in courses and implementation. More on this in the PDF on the Terms and Conditions.

  • What is the professional perspective of a mindfulness teacher?

    Mindfulness Training is evidence based and has acquired a solid base in many professional fields. From medical training to coaching, from leadership development to healing from a burnout or depression patterns, from hospitals to educational institutions: everywhere professionals are interested in mindfulness. Mindfulness is here to stay.
    But, at the same time, we should recognize that mindfulness teacher is not a protected profession and that mindfulness is offered free settings en on open enrolment, which creates a lot of competitors, and a market, with its competition, segmentation and niches.
    Many mindfulness trainers find that, when they insert mindfulness in a professional way in their own field of expertise, with a heart for the matter and a passion for quality, they can obtain their own place on this market.
